About The Bees'Australian Native Bees are divide into two Groups, they are
Tetragonula Bees which there is six known species they are carbonaria, hoskingsi, davenporti, mellipes, clypearis, sapiens. Our interests lie with the Austroplebeia species this group can then be broken down into five other social Groups. Austroplebeia cincta found in far north Queensland around the Daintree and New Guinea. Austroplebeia essingtoni found in West Australia around the Port Essington area Austroplebeia magna found in Northern Territory Austroplebeia australis found in W.A, N.T, and Queensland down to about Newcastle. Austroplebeia cassiae the one of interest to us is a rare species found from north Queensland down to Central Queensland. They have been know to go by the name of "symei" but there formal name is "cassiae" which comes from the flower which it was discovered on in 1910 by Professor Cockerell |
Who We Are |
Our name is Austroplebeia cassiae we are a native australian stingless bee, we are small around 4mm long and black with a dusty white face with a few cream color markings on our body and face. We build our nest's in hollow logs, walls ,small cavity's in trees and rock faces . In an urban environment we can be found in water meter boxes, pot plants also telecom under ground boxes and verandas of houses. Our colony's are made up of Queens, males and workers like European honeybees we produce a small amount of honey around 1Kg per year. We also excel in pollination activity due to our small size being able to penetrate deep into the flower. We are not to be feared we have no sting
